Meeting Thomas
We must work with the tools that we have. Men, by nature, are a violent and warlike sex. For this reason, the greatest warriors one can hire are men. My work is too important to be held back by ideological or ethical purity. So, yes, I employ men to secure the compound, and the duties of these men include the sale of women to fund my work. It is for these grievous but necessary sins, I deny myself the fruit of my own labor.
-Dr. Katherine Lilith
Donna followed Julietâs advice and kept her head down. Because she had been an experienced sailor, she took a job on the âResponse teamâ meaning she spent most days in a wetsuit patrolling the perimeter of the island in a zodiac boat. Dr. Lilith was a wanted woman, so they were always on the lookout for any unwelcome guests. It was one of these patrols that had found Dean and Marcy on the rocky northern coast that first day.
She didnât spend much time at the administration building, her work didnât call for it much and she preferred not to see Marcy who had an office near the entrance. The two of them had suites in separate bungalows. They were friendly and cordial at first, but as the weeks rolled by, they spoke less and less to each other. By the time Donna had her first period, it was Juliet not Marcy that talked her through the experience.
Now, two months later, they hardly acknowledged one another.
Donna saw Juliet frequently and they would âplayâ with one another, but the sex was only physical. They were friends with benefits, nothing more.
So time passed.
Donna had learned not to look in the eyes of the men being led off the boats to the lab, or at the women being led to the doc to be sent elsewhere.
In the morning she would pull on her wetsuit, meet her team on the dock, and motor out of the harbor. In the afternoon, she would come home, shower, put on a sundress, stop at the library to read for a few hours, before having dinner at the cantina and returning to her suite. Three days a week were her days off, and she would spend it wondering what to do with herself. There was no television or internet on the island. They were completely isolated. There was a satellite phone in administration but only Dr. Lilith or her daughters had access and Juliet wouldnât even consider letting Donna have a few minutes with it.
Before Dr. Lilith had taken residence, the Island had belonged to the head of a South Pacific heroin cartel who had a taste for Greek mythology, which explained the architecture of the island. On one of her walks, The man was apparently a Hedonist and Donna found an overgrown temple to Dinoysus buried in a forgotten corner of the garden. She would return to it when she needed time away from the ever present observation everywhere else on the island.
